What is USB OTG?

What is USB OTG? ‘On The Go’

USB ‘On-the-Go’ often abbreviated to USB OTG or just OTG, is a standardized specification that allows USB devices, such as tablets or mobile phones, to act as a host, allowing other USB devices to be communicate with them. Most of new android mobile phone/tablet support OTG now, but not always. So please check with its specification to confirm this.

Can any USB cable be used as OTG cable?

Unfortunately not. However, if you mobile device is OTG compatible, normally a OTG cable is shipped with the device.

How can I tell the different between USB and USB OTG cables/devices?

OTG cable and standard USB cables look the same, however the connection is different.  OTG cable has a ID pin to identify the host while the standard USB cable leave that pin open(not connect anything). This is not visible, you will have to keep your OTG cable that came with your device or purchase a specific USB OTG cable.

Does my phone or tablet have USB OTG?

Any recent Android systems have USB OTG functionality as standard and will come with a USB OTG cable.

Older systems (Android 4.2 and older), maybe don’t’ have USB OTG functionality. You need check this in your device specification. 

Can I view my Marine data via USB?

Is my phone or  tablet compatible with Quark-elec USB devices?

In summary, to access your marine data, on a tablet or phone via USB cable.

You will need:

  1. your tablet/mobile phone support OTG.
  2. your USB OTG cable.

The setup is straightforward:

  1. Connect our marine devices (e.g. A026, A027) to your tablet/mobile phone.
  2. In your chart software (eg. OpenCPN), configure the connection settings to take input from the detected serial port.
  3. Enjoy!
