A few customers asked us why can’t I see my boat on Marine traffic, or why can’t I use Marinetraffic to check my transponder works.

We have noticed different live maps show huge differences in their speed and display of vessels’ tracks. This is perhaps due to the location and elevation of AIS receiver stations, differences in the AIS equipment used and the website’s upload processes.

A location can be covered well in one live map, but very badly in another.

Don’t stick to one if it doesn’t work well at your area. Here are some popular ship tracking websites,

Secondly, beware of using online maps for AIS testing purposes, we suggest customers check with other boats’ AIS display nearby rather than rely on online live maps only.

Remember it takes some time for your AIS transmission to show online, due to the way ‘live’ maps work.

Bear in mind that Class B transponders transmit at 2 Watts power rate, which is about a third of the power of a handheld VHF radio.

If your boat is stationary, class B transponders will only transmit every 3 minutes. This increases to every 30 seconds when your speed over the ground is greater than 2 knots, so do allow some time for your fellow sailors to detect your boat.

Remember, when they first receive your transmission, the only data they will see is your position, speed, course and MMSI number, it can take up to 6 minutes for your ‘Static Data (like vessel name, call sign, vessel type, dimensions, etc.) to be received. This is normal and is the way the AIS system regulates the amount of data being transmitted.

These are some of the best container tracking websites. I hope they all work well.
